Terms of use

Most of what terms of use normally cover does not apply here, because there is no account to suspend, no subscription to cancel and no data of yours on our servers to argue about. What is left is short.

1. What you are agreeing to

By using TapeSheet at tapesheet.com you accept these terms, the risk disclaimer and the privacy policy. If you do not accept them, close the tab; nothing has been created on your behalf and nothing needs to be undone.

The analyzer asks you to accept these terms before it will open a file, and records that acceptance in your own browser. That record is a version string and a timestamp. It is not an account, it is not sent anywhere, and it identifies nobody — clearing your browser storage erases it, and you will be asked again.

2. What the service is

TapeSheet is a free, browser-based tool that reads MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 statement files you supply, computes analytics from them, and lets you keep a trading journal stored in your own browser. It is provided free of charge. It carries no advertising today; the intention is to fund it with advertising on content pages, and section 10 governs that if and when it happens.

There is no account, no sign-up and no server-side processing of your trading statement. That is an architectural fact rather than a policy commitment, and it shapes everything below. There is no sharing feature; nothing the analyzer produces is designed to leave your device.

3. Not advice

Nothing TapeSheet produces is financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and no advisory relationship is created by using it. Trading forex and CFDs carries a high risk of loss. The risk disclaimer forms part of these terms and sets out, specifically, which figures are approximations and in which direction they are wrong.

TapeSheet is not a licensed financial services provider, broker, dealer or investment adviser in South Africa or anywhere else, is not registered with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority or any equivalent regulator, and does not carry on any business that would require such registration. It performs arithmetic on a file you already have. It does not forecast, signal, recommend an instrument, a direction, a size or a moment, and it has no opinion about what you should do next.

Nothing here guarantees profitability, future performance, trading success, that you will pass a prop-firm evaluation, that you are eligible for one, or that any payout is due to you. Historical results do not guarantee future outcomes.

4. No warranty on accuracy

The MetaTrader statement format is undocumented and varies by platform version, broker customisation, language and character encoding. TapeSheet is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of results. We do not warrant that any given broker’s statement will parse, that it will parse completely, or that a figure derived from it is correct.

Results depend on the file you supply, how complete it is, its format and encoding, the assumptions the parser and the calculations make, and the parameters you select. Results may contain errors. Your statement, and your broker’s own records, are authoritative — not our reading of them. Checking our figures against your broker’s records before you rely on them is yours to do. Do not use TapeSheet as the record of account for tax, accounting, audit, dispute or prop-firm compliance purposes. Where a figure here disagrees with your broker, the broker is correct and we would like to hear about it.

The prop-firm simulation is an estimate from your closed trades against rules you selected. It is not any firm’s determination of compliance, eligibility, payout or challenge outcome, and rules vary by firm, program, account type, jurisdiction and date. Verify them with the firm.

The economic calendar is provided on the same basis. Its release dates and times come from the publishers named on its sources page, publishers move releases, and a date in the calendar can be wrong or out of date. Its high and medium labels follow a fixed list of release types and are not a forecast. Check the publisher’s own page before you rely on a date, and do not treat the calendar as a reason to place or avoid any trade.

5. Availability

We do not warrant that TapeSheet will be available, and there is no uptime commitment of any kind. The service may change, break, or be withdrawn entirely, without notice and without liability. A free tool with no accounts can simply stop; plan on that rather than against it.

Because the analyzer is a single file that runs locally, a page you have already loaded keeps working even if the site does not — including with the network disconnected.

6. Your data, your responsibility

Your statements and journal live in your browser’s storage on your device. We cannot read them or recover them, and we hold no copy of them, apart from a statement you chose to email us. Browser storage can be cleared by you, by your browser, or by the operating system reclaiming space, and some browsers evict site data after a period of disuse.

Keeping backups is yours to do. The analyzer’s Settings → Export writes your complete journal to a single JSON file. We are not liable for data loss, and there is no mechanism by which we could restore anything — not as a matter of policy, but because no second copy of your journal exists anywhere.

7. The files you open

You warrant that you are entitled to process every file you open in TapeSheet. For your own statements that is automatic. For anyone else’s — a client’s, an employer’s, a person whose account you manage — it means you have their consent or another lawful basis, and it remains your responsibility rather than ours.

We are not in a position to check, because the analyzer never sends the file to us: it is read inside your browser tab and is never transmitted. That is the reason for the warranty rather than an excuse for it. If processing a file would breach someone’s rights, opening it here does not change that.

8. Acceptable use

You may use TapeSheet for personal or commercial analysis of trading records you are entitled to hold. You may not:

  • Use it to process data you have no right to, including another person’s statements without their consent.
  • Attempt to disrupt or overload the site, or probe it for vulnerabilities without contacting us first (responsible disclosure is welcome — see contact).
  • Scrape or bulk-copy the site’s written content to republish it as your own.
  • Present TapeSheet output as advice, as a regulated report, or as verification of trading results by a third party.
  • Remove or obscure attribution from any printed or exported report that carries it.

Using the tool in ways we have not thought of is fine. It runs on your machine; we are not in a position to police it, and would not want to be.

9. Intellectual property

The site’s written content, design, name and logo belong to TapeSheet. The analytics your trades produce belong to you, and we claim nothing over your statements, journal entries, notes, tags or screenshots — the analyzer never sends them to us.

If you send us a statement file because we asked for it, you allow us to keep it as a test fixture until you ask us to delete it. Remove the account number and the holder name before you send it.

The dates and times in the economic calendar belong to their publishers and are reused under the licences listed on its sources page. Those licences, not these terms, govern your own reuse of them.

MetaTrader, MT4 and MT5 are trademarks of MetaQuotes Software Corp. Other product, company and organisation names on this site belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify them. TapeSheet is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to MetaQuotes, any broker, any prop firm, any publisher of economic data, or any other product or organisation named on this site.

10. Advertising and third-party links

Content pages may carry advertising, and advertising is never placed inside the analyzer, dashboard, journal, trade drawer or prop-firm tracker. Advertisements and any linked third-party sites are not under our control and are not endorsements. Advertising services and other external services have their own terms and privacy policies, which govern what they do; the privacy policy says which technologies they may use. How the site is funded, and the rules we hold ourselves to, are set out on the ethics page.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, TapeSheet is not liable for trading losses, lost profits, lost data, missed prop-firm evaluations, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the site — whether from a defect, an inaccurate figure, an unavailable service or a decision taken after reading something here. Trading decisions are yours alone.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded and some amount is nonetheless payable, our total liability to you for all claims combined is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us and ZAR 1,000. You have paid us nothing, because TapeSheet is free. That is not a trick — it is the honest consequence of a product with no price: there is no subscription to refund and no commercial relationship to unwind, and a cap has to be measured against something. It is an upper limit, not an amount anyone is owed: a claim still has to be proved before anything is payable, and this only caps what a proved claim can reach.

This section does not exclude what the law does not let it exclude. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited — and in South Africa the Consumer Protection Act restricts what a supplier may exclude, including for gross negligence, whether or not the service is free. Where a court finds part of this section goes further than the law allows, it applies to the maximum extent that is allowed and no further, and section 16 keeps the rest standing.

12. Time limit on claims

Any claim relating to TapeSheet must be brought within one year of the events giving rise to it, or it is waived, to the extent the law allows a period to be agreed. Trading records are re-read and re-exported constantly, browsers clear their own storage, and a complaint about a figure shown three years ago cannot be investigated by anyone — including you. Where mandatory law in your country gives you longer, that law wins.

13. Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated; the date at the top changes when they are, and material changes that affect what leaves your device will also be announced on the home page. A material change also re-prompts you in the analyzer, because the acceptance recorded in your browser is tied to a version and a new version is not something you have agreed to yet. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

14. Ending it

There is no account, so there is nothing to terminate and nothing to cancel. Stop using the site whenever you like. To remove your data, use Settings → Clear all data in the analyzer or clear site data in your browser — that is a complete deletion, because there is no second copy anywhere, apart from anything you emailed us, which we delete when you ask.

15. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and the South African courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. “Non-exclusive” matters: if mandatory consumer-protection law in your own country gives you the right to bring a claim where you live, this clause does not take that right away.

16. The small print that keeps the rest working

If part of this is unenforceable, the rest still stands. Consumer-protection law varies enormously by country and some clause above will be void somewhere. If a court strikes one out, it is removed and everything else continues to apply — a single bad sentence does not void the whole agreement.

These terms, the risk disclaimer and the privacy policy are the whole agreement. Nothing else we have written — a landing page, a blog post, a Reddit comment, an answer to an email — is a promise or a warranty, and you should not rely on any of it as one. If something matters to you and it is not in these three documents, ask before you rely on it.

Not enforcing something once does not give it up. If we overlook a breach, or are slow to act on one, that is not a waiver and we may still act later.

We may transfer these terms; you may not. If TapeSheet is ever sold or reorganised, the agreement moves with it. Your rights do not change, and the only data of yours that could move with it is an email you sent us or a statement you donated.

You need to be able to enter a contract. TapeSheet is for adults analysing their own trading records. If you are not old enough to agree to terms where you live, this is not for you.

17. Contact

Questions about these terms: hello@tapesheet.com, or see the contact page.

Emailing us is your own choice, and nothing obliges you to. Please do not send statements, account numbers, broker credentials, or screenshots containing them — describe the problem instead, and say which broker and platform you use. Anything you do send is used only to answer your message, apart from a statement you agree to donate as a test fixture. This is a request, not a disclaimer: once something reaches our inbox we hold it and we are responsible for it, which is precisely why we would rather not receive it.
