TradeZella alternative: free, no signup, and it reads your file before you pay
The short version. You cannot find out whether TradeZella parses your broker’s file until after you have paid for it.
TradeZella is the best-known trading journal in the category, and for a US futures or equities trader it is a serious product. If you trade MT4 or MT5 the case is much weaker — and the pricing model has one specific problem that has nothing to do with the price.
The problem is not $35 a month. The problem is that there is no free trial — only a 14-day money-back guarantee — so the sequence is: hand over a card, then find out whether your broker’s statement imports cleanly. Broker and sync bugs are among the most-cited complaints about the product, and MetaTrader is one of only 13 auto-sync platforms out of the 50-plus brokers supported. That is a bad order of operations for a forex trader on a broker nobody at TradeZella has heard of.
TapeSheet inverts it. Drop the file on the page and the full dashboard renders in about three seconds. If it does not parse you have lost thirty seconds and no money, and the analyzer names the step that failed.

What TradeZella does better than TapeSheet
This section exists on every page in this cluster and it is never empty. If you are reading a comparison that has no such section, you are reading an advert.
- Trade Replay. Tick-by-tick replay with Level 2 and Time & Sales is the single best thing in this category and we have nothing like it. It needs licensed tick data and a playback engine — a recurring bill against a business with no backend. One caveat worth knowing before paying for it: for MT4/MT5-sourced trades it is forex pairs only, with CFDs and indices listed as coming soon.
- Backtesting. Manual backtesting on every tier with historical data back to 2014, and plain-English automated backtesting on Pro and Ultra. We do not backtest at all and have no plans to.
- AI analysis. A chat co-pilot and agents that tag trades and write session reviews. We have no AI features. Reviews are mixed on whether it finds behavioural patterns, but the capability is real and we do not have it.
- PropFirm Sync, and polish generally. Their prop tracking is integrated and free, and the product is simply more finished than ours — a 29-widget dashboard, a mature notebook, playbooks with rule-compliance grading. Support quality is the most-praised thing in their reviews.
Who should pick which
Pick TradeZella
You trade US equities or futures through a broker on their auto-sync list, you want tick replay and backtesting in one tool, and $420–1,188 a year is a rounding error against your account size.
Pick TapeSheet
You trade MT4 or MT5, you want to know whether a tool reads your broker’s file before paying anything, or you are not willing to hand a third party your trading history and an investor password.
One more thing worth saying plainly, because it is the complaint that appears most often in their one-star reviews: several users report billing continuing after they attempted to cancel. We cannot verify individual cases and are not going to characterise them. It is mentioned because “no free trial plus a subscription” is a combination where cancellation friction matters, and because it is checkable public information.
Prices have moved. The tiers were $29 and $49 in 2024–25 and are $35, $59 and $99 now. Over three years at the Pro tier that is roughly $2,124 — a figure their own users quote.
Questions
Is TapeSheet really free, or is there a paid tier coming?
Free, with no tier and nothing held back. The analyzer and the journal are the product; content pages like this one carry ads, and that is the entire business model. It is written up on the ethics page, including what would have to change for that to stop being true.
Can I import my TradeZella data?
No. TapeSheet reads MT4 and MT5 statements, which you can re-export from your terminal for your whole history at any time — that is the point of working from statements rather than a synced database. Your existing notes and tags do not transfer, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Does TapeSheet have a Zella Score?
No, and it never will — that is their name for their composite. TapeSheet computes its own 0–100 composite called the Tape Score. Two things separate it from most composites in this category: its weights and rescaling caps are published in full on the glossary page, and one of its six inputs is the size of the sample it was computed from. A record of nine trades cannot score in the nineties here, and under thirty closed trades the number is not shown at all.
