What AEST / AEDT is, and what it does to your session times
Sydney runs AEST (UTC+10) in the southern winter and AEDT (UTC+11) in the southern summer — changing in the opposite direction to the northern hemisphere, and on different weekends.
The AEST / AEDT trading day, week and year
Sydney is the only zone on this page whose daylight saving falls in the southern summer, which gives a trader there three different candle-close times a year rather than two. In 2026 the daily candle closes at 09:00 Sydney time until 8 March, at 08:00 from 8 March to 5 April, at 07:00 from 5 April to 4 October, at 08:00 again from 4 October to 1 November, and at 09:00 from 1 November, because New York and Sydney change their clocks on four different dates.
London's 08:00 open reaches Sydney at 19:00 in the southern summer and 17:00 in the southern winter, and at 18:00 for one week around Easter and three weeks in October 2026, when only one of the two cities has changed its clocks. The Sydney evening is when the day's biggest volume begins, and the New York open follows between 22:00 and midnight Sydney time depending on the season.
The ASX trades from 10:00 to 16:00 Sydney time on business days, with a pre-open from 07:00 and a closing auction just after 16:00, and on 24 and 31 December 2026 normal trading stops at 14:10. Because the ASX and the Sydney forex session keep the same local hours all year, the only things that move for a trader here are the London open, the New York open and the candle close. Sydney is also where the forex week begins, on Monday morning, when weekend news meets the first thin prices of the week.
A Sydney office day from 09:00 to 17:00 is the Sydney session end to end, joined by Tokyo from 11:00 in the southern summer and 10:00 in the southern winter; nothing European or American is open inside it. The forex week closes on Saturday morning in Sydney, at 09:00 from November to early March, 07:00 in the southern winter and 08:00 in the weeks between, and reopens at the same hour on Monday.

The week's fixed events in AEST / AEDT
Sydney has the Australian events on its own clock, Australian data at 11:30 and the Reserve Bank at 14:30, and meets everything else in the evening and overnight. The Bank of England is 23:00 in January and 21:00 in July, the US jobs report 00:30 or 22:30, the London fix 03:00 or 01:00, and the Federal Reserve 06:00 or 04:00, before the Sydney day begins.
