When the overlap runs
London trades 08:00 to 17:00 its own time and New York 08:00 to 17:00 its own. The overlap is whatever those two have in common, which depends entirely on how far apart the two clocks are on the day you are asking.
What lands inside the overlap
For most of the year the overlap runs from 08:00 to 12:00 in New York, and two of the day's fixed points fall inside it. The US jobs report at 8:30 Eastern is 13:30 in London. The WM/Reuters closing rates are fixed at 16:00 London time, which is 11:00 in New York, and the Financial Stability Board found that dealers hedging orders placed at the fix produce a large spike in trading volume around its calculation window.
Two others fall just outside. The Bank of England's midday decision comes an hour before the overlap opens, and the Federal Reserve's 2:00 pm statement is 19:00 in London, after London has closed. Dealers in the United Kingdom and the United States together reported 57% of the world's foreign exchange turnover in April 2022, and these are the hours both are open.
In 2026 the overlap is five hours long from 9 March to 27 March and from 26 October to 30 October, while one country has changed its clocks and the other has not, and four hours on every other trading day.

For roughly three weeks in March and one in late October, the United States has changed its clocks and Europe has not. In those weeks the overlap runs 12:00 to 17:00 UTC — 5 hours rather than 4. A static table cannot show you that, and most of them do not try.
