When the Tokyo session runs
The Tokyo session is defined by the hours Tokyo keeps: 09:00 to 18:00 local. In UTC that is 00:00 to 09:00 on every day of the year.
What only this session has
Japan keeps one clock all year, so the Tokyo session is the only one of the four whose hours in UTC never move: 09:00 to 18:00 in Tokyo is always 00:00 to 09:00 UTC. Every change you see in its position on your own clock comes from your side: in London the Tokyo open is 00:00 in January and 01:00 in July.
The Bank of Japan releases its Tankan survey at 8:50 in the morning, Japan Standard Time, just before the 09:00 open, which is 23:50 UTC on the day before, and many of its other statistics are published at around the same time. Hong Kong and Singapore keep a clock one hour behind Tokyo, so Tokyo's open is 08:00 in both. Dealers in those two reported 16% of the world's foreign exchange turnover in April 2022, against Japan's 4%, which was down from 5% in 2019. Singapore's 9% made it the third-largest centre in the survey. Because Tokyo's 09:00 is 00:00 UTC, this session starts exactly as the UTC day does.
