What EST / EDT is, and what it does to your session times
US Eastern is EST (UTC−5) in winter and EDT (UTC−4) in summer. It is the anchor for the daily forex candle close, for rollover, and for the US data calendar.
The EST / EDT trading day, week and year
New York is the one clock the daily candle never moves against: it closes at 17:00 New York time every day of the year, because the forex day is defined by it, and the swap charge and the weekly open at 17:00 on Sunday are set from the same hour. What moves for a trader here is everyone else.
London opens at 03:00 New York time for most of the year and at 04:00 in the weeks when the United States and Europe are out of step, which in 2026 means 8 to 29 March and 25 October to 1 November, and in 2027 means 14 to 28 March and 31 October to 7 November. The early European morning is therefore the middle of the New York night either way.
The Asian session starts the evening before. Tokyo's 09:00 open is 19:00 in New York during the American winter and 20:00 during the American summer, and Sydney's 08:00 open swings between 16:00 and 18:00 local, because Sydney runs its own daylight saving in the opposite season. When the new forex week opens at 17:00 on a Sunday, Sydney is either already trading or about to be.
The NYSE trades from 09:30 to 16:00 New York time, and the scheduled American data at 08:30 lands an hour before it. In 2026 the exchange is closed for Thanksgiving on 26 November and on Christmas Day, and closes early at 13:00 on the day after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve. The currency market keeps trading through all of those days, with a thinner afternoon while the equity crowd is away.
A 09:00 to 17:00 day in New York holds all of the New York session but its first hour, and the last three hours of London, which closes at noon New York time for most of the year. In the American winter Sydney also opens at 16:00, an hour before the working day ends. The week closes at 17:00 on Friday and reopens at 17:00 on Sunday in every season, the only zone where those two times never move, and the hour most broker server clocks are set to turn into midnight.

The week's fixed events in EST / EDT
New York sees the whole calendar arrive in order through its own day. The Bank of England's midday decision is 07:00 in the New York morning, the jobs report 08:30, the London fix 11:00 and the Federal Reserve 14:00, and those four stay put all year because London and New York both keep summer time; only the few weeks when the two are out of step move the London ones by an hour. The Asian events arrive the evening before: the Tankan at 18:50 in January and 19:50 in July, New York time. The Reserve Bank of Australia lands around midnight, at 22:30 in January and 00:30 in July.
